Today the scene is equally alluring. Positano can rightfully be called one of the most picturesque towns on the Campania coast. Tutto intorno, a farle corona, si elevano i verdi Monte Comune, S . Maria del Castello, S. Angelo a tre Pizzi (alto 1444 m), Conocchia, Campo dei Galli e Paipo, a Sud ed a Est la vista spazia sul mare fino alla Punta Licosa e a Capri. Sul mare a tre miglia di distanza dalla costa si ergono "Li Galli" o "Sirenuse" piccolo arcipelago, composto da tre isolotti ; il Gallo lungo, la Rotonda e il Castelluccio, ritenuto, da sempre, mitica dimora delle ammalianti Sirene e divenute in questi ultimi tempi rifugio degli artisti Massine e Nurejev. Le origini di Positano, come quelle di tante altre citta, si perdono nella notte dei tempi ove si confondono storia e legenda. Come spesso accadeva in passato, alla mancanza di dati si sopperiva con miti, uno di questi vuole Positano fondata da Poseidone, il dio del mare Nettuno, per amore della ninfa Pasitea da lui amata. Certo e che i Fenici e Greci, nei loro viaggi verso occidente, posero piede in questa contrada allora forse abitata da Oschi o Piceni. I Romani costruirono nei pressi della spiaggia Grande una ricca villa patrizia, ora sepolta dai giardini e dalla Chiesa dell'Assunta. Con la caduta dell'Impero Romano Positano entro a far parte della Repubblica di Amalfi, prima Repubblica marinara, e attraverso un periodo floridissimo grazie al commercio marittimo con gli altri paesi del Mediterraneo. Purtroppo seguirono anche periodi tristi, specie con la dominazione Angioina ed aragonese che vide la nostra contrada piu volte esposta alla offese prima dei pirati saraceni e poi di quelli turchi. Per difendersi dalle continue incursioni piratesche, i positanesi eressero a propria difesa tre torri di guardia che ancora oggi fanno bella mostra di se a Fornillo, alla Trasita e alla Sponda, ed altre all'interno dell'abitato. In questo stesso periodo sempre per sfuggire ai pirati si ampliarono i villaggi montani di Montepertuso, e Nocelle dove trovarono asilo gli abitanti di Positano e Laurito. Nel '700 vi fu un periodo di floridezza come testiomoniano le numerose ville tardo barocche edificate lungo il versante orientale. L'unita d'Italia costrinse molti positanesi, come tanti altri meridionali, ad emigrare oltre Atlantico dove la fortuna arrise a qualcuno di loro. Dopo la prima guerra mondiale, nella quale Positano pago un altissimo tributo di sangue, questo paese, nel quale gia si rifugiavano grandi artisti come Vincenzo Caprile, divenne asilo per Tanti artisti e letterati russi e tedeschi che la elessero a loro dimora godendo, finalmente, di pace e tranquillita. Tra i tanti ricordiamo Seminov, Zagarouiko, Essad Bey, Clavel, Escher, Massine, Kovaliska, Ghillausen ecc. che con le loro opere fecero conoscere questo angolo di paradiso al mondo intero. Il boom turistico si e avuto nel secondo dopoguerra, ma pur avendo avuto un intenso sviluppo Positano ha saputo conservare la sua caratteristica peculiare di citta verticale e la sua architettura solare con i suoi angoli suggestivi e panoramici. Grazie al loro innato senso di ospitalita i positanesi hanno saputo conquistare e mantenere uno dei primi posti tra le piu rinomate localita turistiche del mondo intero. Ma non solo nel campo turistico ha saputo primeggiare, anche nel campo della moda e un punto di riferimento internazionale e le innumerevoli bottege ed eleganti boutique, che costellano le vie e i vicoli, soddisfano tutte le esigenze di una clientela cosmopolita. L'artigianato della moda e' un'attivita' che contraddistingue Positano gia' dalla fine degli anni cinquanta quando, per la creazione del bikini, innovativo costume da bagno, la cittadina della costiera amalfitana divenne famosa in Italia e nel mondo. Oggi la produzione e' molto ampia e offre una grande varieta' di capi d'abbigliamento: si spazia dai tipici indumenti per il mare, parei, copricostume, borse e bermuda, ai piu' impegnati capi da pomeriggio o da gran sera, fino ai particolarissimi abiti da sposa. Fantasie allegre e luminose, colori brillanti e impiego di tessuti assolutamente naturali, lino, garza o cotone, caratterizzano la moda positanese. Dopo una fase, negli anni cinquanta e sessanta, in cui predominavano i disegni d'ispirazione hawaiana, si e' passati a un predominio, nel corso degli anni settanta, delle garze in tinta unita; oggi prevalgono invece le fantasie che raffigurano le piante mediterranee, i limoni, i fiori e le foglie, "prese in prestito" dalla rigogliosa natura circostante. Cosi' simpatiche botteghe rallegrano le stradine del centro, e costituiscono una meta obbligata per i numerosi turisti che, in ogni periodo dell'anno, si recano nella cittadina. Oltre che per gli abili sarti, Positano si distingue, poi, per i famosi calzolai, capaci di realizzare a mano, anche al momento, mentre si attende davanti alla bottega, i caratteristici sandali positanesi: "ragno", "fratino", infradito, zoccoli di legno o di sughero, e le comodissime ciabatte di tela, con suola di corda. La gastronomia di Positano offre una serie di gustose specialita', alcune legate alla tradizione piu' tipicamente marinara, altre alla cucina contadina. Cosi' se da un lato si potranno assaporare prelibati piatti a base di pesce, sempre rigorosamente fresco, dall'altro sara' possibile gustare deliziose pietanze a base di carne. Tra le ricette piu'caratteristiche si segnalano i gustosi spaghetti alle vongole veraci, solo con olio, naturalmente extravergine di produzione locale, e prezzemolo, senza pomodoro, le deliziose zuppe di pesce, le stuzzicanti alici fritte, condite con la menta, l'aceto e l'aglio, i delicati involtini di pesce spada, i polpetti affogati, cotti nel coccio con i pomodori di S. Marzano, o lessati o addirittura gustati al mercato, appena pescati, e le impepate di cozze. E per chi preferisce la carne, si consigliano le ricche grigliate alla brace, piatto tipico di queste parti, accompagnate da squisiti contorni a base di verdure, preparate nei modi piu' svariati. Prelibati, poi, i prodotti caseari, soprattutto le mozzarelle, da assaporare al naturale o arrostite su foglie di limone, secondo una ricetta del luogo. Positano e' inoltre nota, come le altre cittadine della costiera, per un'antica tradizione pasticcera: tra le altre prelibatezze si segnalano le delizie al limone, che da queste parti si distingue per l'ottima qualita' e per la straordinaria dolcezza, e poi la torta positanese, la "babarese", una sfoglia di baba' ripiena di panna e fragoline, e l'originale sfogliatella senza ricotta. Il tutto da accompagnare con ottimi liquori, preparati secondo antiche ricette, a base di profumatissimi agrumi locali, o di fragoline, mirti selvatici, rose, alloro, fichi d'india, finocchini e noci. Proprio nel centro di Positano, nella piccola Piazza Flavio Gioia, si trova la chiesa parrocchiale di Santa Maria Assunta. L'edificio, dalla grande cupola maiolicata a mosaico, conserva al suo interno importanti opere d'arte tra le quali si distinguono una Circoncisione, stupenda opera di Fabrizio Santafede, della fine del XVI secolo, e una deliziosa tavola in stile bizantino del XIII secolo, raffigurante una Madonna col Bambino. Secondo la tradizione popolare, l'origine del nome del paese e' legata proprio a quest'icona: razziata dai Saraceni, la preziosa tavola fu riportata a terra in seguito ad una tempesta, mentre dalla riva si udiva il prodigioso grido "posa, posa". Restituito il maltolto il mare si placo'; in quel luogo fu allora costruita una chiesa in onore della Vergine e attorno sorse il paese, che prese il nome di Positano. Di grande interesse, inoltre, il campanile, che presenta un bassorilievo medioevale raffigurante un mostro marino, alcuni pesci e una volpe, probabilmente a sottolineare la doppia anima degli abitanti della costa, per meta' contadini, per meta' marinai. La sua felice posizione geografica la colloca nel baricentro di un territorio tra i piu ameni e ricchi di storia e di bellezze naturali. Durante il periodo estivo una serie di feste patronali, tra le quali ricordiamo quella del 2 luglio a Montepertuso e quella del 15 agosto a Positano, e manifestazioni culturali come il premio internazionale per l'arte della danza, in onore del grande coreografo e ballerino Leonide Massine allietano le serate rendendo ancora piu piacevole e suggestivo il soggiorno in questa ridente localita denominata "la gemma della divina costiera". Right in the centre of Positano, in the small Piazza Flavio Gioia, stands the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta. The building with its large majolica-mosaic dome, contains important works of art, outstanding among which is a Circumcision, a stupendous work by Fabrizio Santafede, from the end of the sixteenth century, and a delightful thirteenth-century Byzantine-style panel depicting the Virgin and Child. According to popular tradition, the origin of the town's name is linked to this very icon: looted by the Saracens, the precious panel was brought back to land following a storm, while from the shore was heard the prodigious cry "posa, posa" (put it here). Having given back the ill-gotten icon, the sea calmed down, so a church was built in honour of the Virgin on that spot and the town grew around it, that took the name of Positano. The bell tower is also very interesting with a medieval bas-relief portraying a sea monster, some fish and a fox, probably to underline the dual nature of the coastal inhabitants' souls, half countrymen and half seamen. Positano cookery offers a series of tasty specialities, some linked to typical seafood traditions, others to country cookery. So, both delicious fresh fish- and meat-based dishes are available. Tortuose, segrete e ripide scalette che si inerpicano fra archi, loggiati, case basse, bizantine, a cupola dipinte di bianco, di rosa, di arancione, immerse nel verde di palmizi e di agrumeti, hanno la funzione di strade, quasi a sfida della gravita. Per questo suo aspetto Positano fu definita dal pittore Paul Klee "l'unico posto al mondo concepito su un asse verticale invece che orizzontale". Sull'origine di Positano sono fiorite molte leggende, una di queste vuole che Positano sia stata fondata da Poseidone, dio greco del mare, per amore della ninfa Pasitea da lui amata. Alcuni scrittori attribuiscono la colonizzazione ai Fenici, Strabone ritiene che siano stati i Picentini, Plinio che sia di origine etrusca, altri infine ritengono che Positano sia stata fondata dai profughi di Paestum quando la citta fu distrutta dai Saraceni. Considerata una delle localita turistiche piu esclusive e piu rinomate del mondo, il fascino di Positano e legato alla sua architettura solare con i suoi angoli suggestivi, alla fusione tra storia e leggenda, alla magia delle sue atmosfere e alla bellezza dei suoi panorami: la suggestione del suo antico borgo marinaro, le sue dieci spiagge d'incanto di cui si ricordano Marina Grande, Ciumicello, La Porta, Arienzo e Fornillo, il senso di ospitalita dei suoi abitanti, i numerosi servizi alberghieri rendono Positano la metadi una vacanza indimenticabile.
